Iranian frame drum

daf-main.jpg

The daf is a round, flat frame drum.
It has a hole for the thumb within the frame.
The daf is usually held upright when played. It has rings in the inside that, when used correctly, can make a rather pleasant sound.
It is usually made of animal skin, but you can now find many synthetic ones that are cheaper and get damaged less easily (though the quality of sound is not as good).
Though used in all types of Iranian music, the daf is most commonly heard in Kurdish and Sufi music.
